Anyone like to recommend a surveyor for an out of water condition insurance survey? Boat is at James Watt Dock. Cheap 'n cheerful rather than in depth.

I used TeemSurveys.

Price is based on boat length.

Avoid them like the plague ! He's a useless incompetent, no wonder he's cheap.

Told me it was my fault that he didn't spot water leaking into my boat from the anode through hull bolts and missed two different leaks from the log and impeller fittings that even I had spotted.

I could go on about the other stuff he failed to report which I mostly had already noticed.

For an insurance survey, a surveyor who doesn't notice all the little things that you know are bust but haven't got round to fixing is desirable.

I would get a better surveyor to check out a boat I was looking at buying and didn't know.

I can only go on my experience. I've had 2 boats surveyed one was done by Teem Surveys I found them ok maybe I was lucky. my previous boat was surveyed by a highly regarded largs based surveyor, I found him mostly useless. I would never use him again.
I believe with an insurance survey assuming you've owned the boat for a while you will probably know more wrong with the boat than a surveyor will find.

I undertook this instead of just changing the insurer. The boat's rigging being over 10 years old, was condemned without any justification, any evidence, statistical, anecdotal or heresay that any Tradewind 35 had ever been lost through a rigging failure.

Nearly at the end of this exercise, I have a pile of discarded but perfectly serviceable rigging just waiting to be binned. I'm left with the thought that I might just have changed the rigging for something that is faulty or not as reliable.

Unless you're sailing a round the world racing craft, I'd consider changing the insurer. The original request to undertake the survey was not conditional upon renewal of the insurance and therefore no insurance had been ever refused.

It is said that the most common time for rigging to fail is shortly after renewal!

Jim politely suggested I go look somewhere cheap as it's only for insurance. He did suggest someone mentioned on here....

That was possibly a follow on question. When changing Insurers, what is the requirement? I have a survey which is now 10 years old (by Survey One). In this time I've upgraded everything that was required at the time and also continued with preventative maintenance where required. Rigging, for example has all been replaced within the last three years by MRS.

Can I just turn up at an insurers door (so to speak) with a copy of my survey and expect cover?

Don't see why not - a new survey isn't going to come up with something that has not been attended to. Pantaenius worth a shot?
