West, backing south, 6 to gale 8, increasing severe gale 9 to violent storm 11 for a time, then veering west 5 to 7 later. Sea state very rough or high, becoming very high or phenomenal.

And that's just tonight. Another one on Saturday then again on Sunday. Went out to the boat today and lashed a few things down.

Listening to Dr Simon Keeling, the weather guy, he was talking about a 'sting jet' which is a high speed layer of air just below a low (one caused the Fastnet). Anyway it's pointing right at the sea off Norway's south coast as the low pops over the top of Scotland. I reckon you will waiting on weather until Sunday at least, plenty of beer time, unless your employer, like mine, bans one from drinking when called off. I get breathalysed at the gate and subject to random tests, even when working in the office.

We've certainly missed the worst of it here but there were some fierce winds in Stirling last night, with one particularly bad squall sometime after 2am that made our stone built house shudder. Just one bad blast fortunately. Branches and stuff scattered about, but no serious damage as far as I can see.

Visited my pampered craft on Windermere today.

You will understand my consternation when I say, at 400m through bins, that the forehatch was wide open unlike when I last checked over 10 days ago. Had been left on vent and catch had broken - easy to sort just a nuisance

As long as your anchor tension is OK, yous should be fine. I would not like to try boarding a chopper in those conditions on a helideck.!

I'm near Sandnes, SE of Stavanger. Rough night. Power lost for about 6 hours last night, fortunately after I had cooked! Lots of the local ferries have been cancelled or delayed. My younger son is currently living on Orkney, near Stromness, and he had it as bad as here. Hopefully it quietens down through next week, as I have a ferry to Denmark then Amsterdam-Newcastle next weekend. At least I have a berth on both boats, so if it's lumpy I can just stay in my bunk! Son no1 is up to check the boat at Peterhead Marina today hopefully. She had 6 lines out to the pontoon,and it's reasonably sheltered by higher ground to the west.

It'll be vented now all right! Is the hatch still attached?
