New plans for Edinburgh Marina

Post by lady_stormrider »

I am perusing t'internet whilst off work and spotted this news item:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-e ... e-30700185

That's a lot of boat capacity to suddenly spring up.

400 berths will soon fill up if the history of Clyde marinas are anything to go by.

And then all they'll need is an extension spur to the Tram system

MDL are the 'marina consultants' who are probably hoping to be the owners/operators of the marina, if so one can expect high charges. They also want a fast ferry service to Kircaldy, which is weird as it is not that long by road to Kircaldy, sounds stupid to me. As for the Edinburgh tram extension you can see the joined up thinking is still missing. Currently a wonderfully wide road is being filled in each side by pavement expansion and wheely bin parking, to the point that a near 3 lane wide road (each way) is being reduced to 1 lane wide road. A tram will just do wonders for the traffic flow. The flats are a good idea though. Is this the harbour where the flour mill is?

What is needed is a marina for smaller boats that is low cost. Maybe the current Marina can default to that.

I imagine that after all the 'Consultations' have taken place that'll be all they can afford

What is the exact location of the proposed marina? Is it the basin currently used for swinging moorings by Royal Forth Yacht Club, and Forth Corinthian Yacht Club?

IIRC, the commodore of FCYC is a member here.

Edit - Ocklepoint ?

Hmmm - the link to the official Edinburgh Marina link says it is Granton (?!) 2.5 miles from the City Centre. My knowledge of Edinburgh is sparse.

It is proposed that the marina will be in the remaining part of the west harbour at Granton. This used to be larger than the east harbour but was partly filled-in for building land forty-odd years ago. I think the moorings referred to are in the east harbour.
