Tablets & navigation software

Post by Silkie »

The big blue and yellow Santa came this morning and has been particularly generous this year, delivering a 64Gb Blackberry Playbook to all and sundry.

I know there have been countless discussions on this before and I've paid no attention thinking them of little relevance to me but I'm now in the market for some tablet chart plotter software and seek advice from those who have trod this path before.

The App store offers UK Nautical Charts for £20 described as:

This UK Nautical Charts App offers fully offline, GPS accurate, high quality marine charts(derived from UKHO data) with POI layers (Buoy, Lights, obstructions etc) from ENCs covering United Kingdom water for fishing & recreational boating. The UK marine chart app gives you access to 700+ RNC marine chart catalog derived from UKHO data. Nautical chart app also provides offline access to POI layers covering Buoys, Lights, Obstructions and other data created from ENCs.

What do you think?

That seems good value. £20 per year....

So also is the MemoryMap package at £30 for, well, forever....

But you can't wrap yon fresh-run salmon in a Dangleberry, now. Sometimes there are just no substitutes for a 50p old Admiralty Chart from the Beaulieu Boat Jumble. Espeshully when you use the clean side....

This looks really good, but I'm not clear on two things...
* Is the 1 year applicable to the updates only, or does the chart somehow reases after 1 year?

* Is it one download for £20 that covers all these charts inside the one big download?
Or perhaps £20 per chart. (there seems to be many)
Geoff.

I've been meaning to enquire about chart coverage for a while and have now done so and will report back.

Impressive support! They've replied in the time it took me to type the above and you get access to all the UK charts listed in all nine folios although I presume you would only want to download those of interest.

On the question of what happens after a year:

"For UK chart folio, UKHO requires us to do the following:
1) Disable GPS features of the app at the end of one year term.
2) Stop providing chart updates.

We are trying to obtain permission from UKHO to remove restriction 1.).

These limitations do not apply to US chart folio."
