I Found This Interesting.....
I have been instructed to clear out most of my old yachting magazines - a collection going back to the 1950s.
In the July 1975 Yachting World they carry out a group test which they used to call 'One Of A Kind Rally.
In this test they were looking at yachts around 8.5 metres.
The selcted group were(in alphabetical order):
Atlanta 8.5
Ballad
Brin de Folie
Contest 30
Dufour 27
Ecume
Jaguar 27
Kings Cruiser 29
Macwester 27
Sabre
She 27
Tarantelle
Trapper 500
Varne 27
Vega
The criteria that points were given for were:
Deck layout
Cockit layout
Quality of fittings
Siting of fittings
Deck surface
Nav lights
Finish
Engine installation
Ventilation
Comfort below
Finish below
Galley
Chart table
Lavatory
Electrics
Appearance
Suitability for family cruising
Obviously some of these criteria are subjective.
There were three equal winners, and three further commended entries.
Which do you think that they were?

So I'll say
Trapper 500
Vega
Ecume
mostly all a pure guess as I was only 9 when the test was done.

I won't give the results just yet - but I found the results interesting and was quite surprised.

Re: I Found This Interesting.....
I would have thought that in 1975 it was the Trapper 28.....
We had one from 72 to 76.
I thought the 300 and 500 came a bit later
Still, if its in the comparison table, the 500 it must be.

Anything from around 78-82 covering anything bout the Hummingbird 30?
What do you intend doing with them?
Might be worth swapping for a sail on HB.
You still have my number Pete

Engine was a fair size, though. You'll get an idea of the scale from the guy at the controls half way along the engine -mm5aho wrote:Rowana wrote:In 1975 I was sailing on something just a wee bit bigger -

7,500HP 6-cylinder

Edit - Why is it not showing the picture of the engine??
