Attaching Wood Trim / Mouldings To GRP Hull

Post by BlowingOldBoots »

Hi,

I have completed the lining around my refurbished windows. I have used a foam back leather effect cloth and glued it straight to the plain GRP. Now I need to finish the trim to hide the joins. My plan is to glue low profile blocks into the corners of the hull and then attach the moulding to the blocks using panel pins and a small amount of glue.

I was thinking that maybe there is a high grab, strong adhesive, thick, double sided tape available that I could use. For example the tape could be used to stick the moulding to the hull or the blocks to the hull.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

How about using sticky pads - the thin foam thingies with glue on each side? The good ones will stick to anything and the foaminess makes them good for bumpy surfaces.

I'll try them, its a good idea. If there is enough of them then the adhesion could be quiet secure where the trim is straight and not stressed i.e. flat surface. There are a few compound curves that need finished and I imagine that a stronger solution is required here.

I found this company which appears to have lots of tapes for many applications. If nothing else it might be worth a bookmark for future use: -

Well, just to add a cautious note, I fitted a whole lot of cheap LED lamps into GRP cockpit lockers a couple of weeks ago. These use sticky tape attachments (not rubbish, 3M double sided tape), and almost all of them have now fallen off - without the boat going anywhere. Utterly shyte performance. If I re-install them it'll be with something a bit more robust.

Thanks for the experience.

I think that I've bought the same ones - pack of 3 round fittings - each fitting takes 3 AAA batteries - can't remember where I bought them - Lidl at a guess. I've only fitted one so far - onto wood inside the food locker so I'll see how it goes. I have access to rolls of double sided tape if I need to upgrade it. As long as they don't fall off quite early, then most DS tapes get stronger with time.

Yes, they're the beasts. Silver coloured plastic and yes, Lidl I think - one of their cheap deals.

Use Sikaflex, great bonding agent.
I know of a boat lifted onto a truck which had recently had the keel rebedded in sika, after lifting onto truck they realised there were no keel bolts in, sika held keel on!
