I noticed this last week in sound of Islay. Is someone laying a pipe across Jura? Why?
Poor image, some camera shake, but only one I took!

I wonder if it is anything to do with the grid connection for the Islay tidal array?

A wire could be such a diameter, but would be expected to carry a very large amount of power.
Maybe this is that Stirling group's answer to undergrounding the Beauly to Denny line? Take it the long way round?
