TOP down
.
Error 500 (internal server error) since 01.00 this morning. Hard to see why a forum run by a large publishing group with tens of thousands of members should go down quite so often when a pisswilly little site like this with zero budget and almost zero staff should manage to stay up most of the time. If I was IPC I would be looking to change my hosting provider.

Re: TOP down
I suspect (I haven't checked tho) that your server may be carrying a tad less traffic.

Re: TOP down
What about people who only turn up here every year or so, because TOP is down? Oops.....sarabande wrote:what is Bluemoment's policy toward refugees suffering from electronic deprivation ?

I would just like to agree what a fantastic job Nick does with his pisswilly (why doesn't the filter object to that?) facilities. Just a pity the saner denizens of TOP haven't learned to appreciate the calm, erudite, gentle humour of this site. (That sycophantic enough?)

Yes, of course. And your point is? The hosting platform matches the traffic. If everyone from TOP came over here the server would go down, but the site would be transferred to a more suitable server (dedicated instead of VPS) and it wouldn't happen again. This forum has changed servers four times since its inception.Arghiro wrote:I suspect (I haven't checked tho) that your server may be carrying a tad less traffic.

That's better - can't beat a touch of sycophancymarisca wrote:I would just like to agree what a fantastic job Nick does with his pisswilly (why doesn't the filter object to that?) facilities. Off to a funeral, so it's Silkie's fault if the server goes down in the next few hours

Re: TOP down
Ok, my point is with 50k plus members the peak load fluctuation of, say 10-15% ( a pure guess) is expensive to accomodate "just in case". I suppose statistically a small membership is less predictable or smoothed, but accomodating 2x or 3x average load will not be an issue. Hence, I suspect they are more susceptible to load fluctuations, especially if there is some outside stimulous in the news.Nick wrote:Yes, of course. And your point is? I thought that was pretty obvious, but maybe I am wrong or you are a tad defensive. Who cares?
Sorry to hear about the funeral, I hope it turns out as a celebration of a well lived life rather than the mourning of a lost one. I intend to sponsor a wild celebratory wake for anyone strong enough to outlive me.
Re: TOP down
jhr, I'll have you know, sirrah, that I am at least 4 times more prolific than you. And I post at least once a month, (where the given value for month normally equates to a calendrical Terran one, than a Jovian one.)
That's a thought: with 63 moons around Jupiter, a sextant would be very useful, but correction for refraction in the hydrogen/helium atmosphere could be a little tricky, and the frame would have to be resistant to hydrogen sulfide.
Maybe my plastic Ebbco would have more value on Jupiter's eBay ?

I can't even remember the last time an outside stimulus fluctuated my load.Arghiro wrote:Hence, I suspect they are more susceptible to load fluctuations, especially if there is some outside stimulous in the news.

Re: TOP down
Not really. It might be the difference between two and three servers, a few grand a year at most. Web hosting isn't that expensive really, and gets better as you scale it up. I see it's back up now.Arghiro wrote: Ok, my point is with 50k plus members the peak load fluctuation of, say 10-15% ( a pure guess) is expensive to accomodate "just in case"
