Hi,
Just a quickie for you.
Those of you who have been to Weather School know the importance I attach to knowing your airmasses (know the airmass, know 70% of the forecast) and the tips I give you to identify the airmass which will affect the area you are interested in.
Well, today is a classic example of the Returning Polar Maritime airmass, evidenced by the hefty showers now rushing into the southwest of the UK.
The radar picks these showers out very nicely at http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/ukukradf.htm and the satellite shows the white tops of the cumulonimbus clouds heading into the southern Ireland, Wales and SW England really well ( http://www.sat24.com/gb ).

I'm trying to get my head round this as I haven't been to weatherschool - Yet!
I'm looking at the synoptic charts here - http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Wea ... rts-5-Days, and here - http://www.wunderground.com/modelmaps/m ... &domain=EU and the wind observation map here - http://xcweather.co.uk/
Are you saying that the Polar Maritime airmass you are seeing is what is showing on the synoptic chart as coming down the west of Greenland, and round the bottom of the low??
There is a lovely swirl on your satelite picture going up the south-east of Ireland. Is this caused by a disturbance on the occluded front??
