I received my annual newsletter and page of marina charges from Ardlui today.

They are not increasing their prices for this year, although the VAT increase has lifted total costs.

That's still the plan - It's just that I haven't done anything positive about it yet!

Mistral was icebound at Ardlui when we visited on Saturday.

Planning to move on to the hard on the Clyde during the first week in February.

Is it not possible to organise the move so that she can be lifted straight in? That would surely be cheaper and if you can arrange a night in the slings at Ardlui you could slap a coat of anti-foul on then surely.

My train of thought seems easily derailed at the moment, but is roughly thus:

My insurance company want an ‘out of water’ survey – not sure how happy / legal it would be for a surveyor to be aboard whilst in the slings.

The mast hasn’t been down since April 2003. I want to rivet on the blocks for the stackpack, replace the VHF antenna and cable, replace the forestay, fit new headsail reefing, replace the steaming light.

Remaining afloat at Ardlui doesn’t cost me anything until 1st April, but being on the hard does cost – even at Ardlui.

With hindsight, I should have dropped the mast at the end of the season and left the hull afloat – it wouldn’t cost me any more and I could have worked on it. It might not have happened anyway as Oct / Nov was very busy for me at work and the weather has been rubbish since.

My existing forestay has a bearing at the top / drum at the bottom so that the hanked on sail could be furled away for storage. I’ve been trying to work out what length of usable wire will be on a ‘normal’ forestay. I’ve decided that I need to spend £50 for the extra foil to extend the Plastimo 609S, but don’t know how much of the 1.5M will be needed. I’ve eventually decided to have a genoa with a 9.0M luff which is 200mm longer than the ‘standard’ 609 – hopefully, it will fit – I think that there should be another 100mm available.

Put my 1/3 rd deposit down on a Genoa and Mainsail from Jeckells today – they should be manufactured during early March so I have time to amend the order if needed! Went for 7.5oz Ocean Premium Plus for both sails – a third very deep ( 12.75’ ) reef on the main – 130% genoa with padded luff. Hopefully we’ll go like stink with less heel!! Hummingbird better look out!

Largs are happy to provide 2 months on the hard, on a day by day charge, without any commitment on my part to take a berth so I think that will be where I’ll go – It’s an easy pleasant run from the house.

I got a quote from John Shepherd for the transport, and a slightly cheaper one from MJS Boat Transport of Balloch.

I want to improve my slab reefing by copying Nick’s Barton Slab Reefing Kit – Jimmy Green seems to be doing the bigger 32mm / 3 block for the price of the smaller one.

Much more – memory map, anchor chain, dock lines, etc if the money pot doesn’t run dry.

And, of course, the antifouling!!
