WEEKEND WEATHER FORECAST
Issued: 0900 Thursday 26th November 2009

SATURDAY:
Low pressure is going to be tracking through northern England on Saturday morning. The occluded front will have some moderate or heavy bursts of rain associated with it. Most of the rain is clear of the east of England by daybreak, and then will be clearing into the North Sea away from northern England by early afternoon.
Following for most of the country will be sunny spells and showers. Most of the showers will be through northern and western areas, a few of them heavy on the coasts. The showers turning increasingly wintry over the high ground of Scotland.
Southern counties of England and Wales may well be affected by some very strong winds, these to severe gale force through the English Channel, and later in the day cloudier skies may well bring more persistent rain back to southern coasts.
Winds cyclonic 10-12kt (F3-F4) near the low, mainly N-NE 12-15kt (F4 occ F5) through Scotland and Northern Ireland. Generally SW 23-30kt (F6-F7) through southern England, but up to 40-55kt (F8 –F 9) and gusting to 60kt along southern coasts.

SUNDAY:
Yet another area of low pressure will; become centred through central parts of the country on Sunday, and there is the potential for some nasty conditions. Heavy rain will be associated with the low, this starting over southern and southeastern England, then spreading into the Midlands and Wales as the southeast becomes drier. With the rain being heavy at times there is an increasing threat of it turning to sleet and snow over the hills of Wales and northern England, and I would not completely rule out the threat of some wintry precipitation at lower levels in these areas by the end of Sunday afternoon. It could be that the low is further south of the country, but this does need to be watched carefully.
For Ireland and Scotland it will be a cold afternoon. There will be a strong northeast wind blowing and snow showers are likely, especially over eastern and northern facing coasts and hills.
Windy in all places, except near the centre of the low where it will be 8-10kt (F3). Becoming SW 25-35kt (F6-F 8) to the south of the low, NE 24-28kt (F6-F7) to the north of it.
Note that the confidence in this forecast for Sunday is considered low at the present time, so you are advised to monitor the forecast carefully over the coming days.

.
Thanks Simon,

As always it is much appreciated having your weekly forecasts on here.

Glad to hear that - as I had surmised from the synoptics - the stupidly big winds and squalls of the last three days are likely to ease over the weekend. Easterly winds are great for us aound Oban, it tends to be bright and sunny as the Scottish hills absorb most of the moisture on its long trek over here from the North Sea.
