Sound of Harris chart

Post by Nick »

.
Heading off Friday for two weeks, maybe up to the Sound of Harris if the weather is kind . . . what chart does the panel recommend? DaveS? Any chance of a lend? I know we need a new one because the buoyage has all changed.

You could just about get away with 2841 Loch Maddy to Loch Resort inc. Sound of Harris which is 1:50,000 and does show everything, but you'd need a good magnifying glass.

I have a copy of 2642 Sound of Harris, 1:20,000 which is much clearer, is corrected up to last year (when it was withdrawn), would be fairly easy to correct to date, but has the peculiarity of being aligned at about 45 deg to N which makes staying oriented and plotting Lat / Long a bit more tricky than normal. I've added a series of pencilled in "N" arrows which helps. You could have it to keep if you want.

The current Sound of Harris is 2802, with the unusual scale of 1:21,000, is aligned with N but has another peculiarity i.e because of its size it folds in both directions, making it a bit awkward to deploy on the chart table. It is corrected up to 10/4/09. You could borrow it provided I get it back by the middle of July because we're hopefully heading that way then.

My reward for spending the last month working on the house is to get to play on the boat this weekend, so a rendezvous could be organised.

On a related, but divergent, thought: given the price of paper charts, Gael Force's offer on the Navman 5380 + full UK & Ireland Cmap chart at £269.95 is very good value.

Ifwe see you on your way out, you can borrow the one that we have on board - up to date-ish (well maybe 3 years ago). Don't know when the buoyage changed though.

Sorry to continue the divergence but I had a look and couldn't find any Navman gear at all on the Gael Force site.

The buoyage changed substantially in both the Cope and Stanton channels in August 2007.

The new chart 2802 was published in July last year.

We bought a copy in Black Nancys today.

I've not tried their website, but am looking at a flier titled "New Season Offers" that must have come through the post or inside a magazine a week or two ago. It does say limited stock - maybe they've all gone. Might be worth a phone: 0845 450 1099 or 01463 229 400
They quote 3 prices: £149.95 for the plotter, £209.95 with a local chart, and £269.95 with the full UK and I chart.

Dunno, but Admiralty Chart 2642 Sound of Harris is on the UKHO/RYA Area 3 West Coast of Scotland CD-ROM. Might be an inexpensive alternative.
