Burgie bother

Post by Booby Trapper »

Anyone else had burgie bother?
This one had only been flying for 3 weeks, can't see it lasting 2 years.

I have forwarded this pic to Prestige Flags and will let you know what they say.

Looks like it has been thrashing a shroud . . . burgees are of course designed to fly from the masthead, not to beat repeatedly against the rigging.

Anyone else's coming to bits yet?

Thanks Nick
It was flown on the backstay as I don't have a flag halyard on the spreaders. It wasn't thrashing against anything but did fly in some gales last week. I should have learned from a previous burgee that I had and wrap it up when not in use.

Looks to me as if the "sky" hasn't been far enough under the yellow edging to be properly caught by the stitching.

No deterioration so far, but I did notice on its maiden trip (the CC) it made a fair racket banging against the lower shroud. Adjusting the flag haliard to "half mast" cured this, but it still banged against the mainsail on certain points of sailing. The problem seems to be that it's a lot bigger than the various other budgies and flags I decorate the mast with.

and it's had some abuse in the last few weeks.

I should extract digit and take it in when I leave the boat I suppose.

Oh dear it looks like you're all going to have to fit wider spreaders, like mine....
Anyway, that's us aff the noo (well, ramorra). Up the loch to Portavadie, then through the nolly and out into the magic land of islands. Skye is not he limit.
Hope to eyeball a surfer or two en route!

Got a call from Stu Fried of Prestige Flags who was concerned as to how fast your boat went, Ian - they have had probs occasionally with 40+knotg power boats, but I assured him that wasn't the case here!

We'll replace the flag meanwhile free of charge and keep an eye on things to see if any more come apart. In the meantime, although it was manifestly not the case in this instance I would suggest that the 'fly two years' warranty doesn't cover flags hoisted in such a manner that they thrash themselves repeatedly against other parts of the vessel.

Some of the problems with Bluemoment Burgee although not the fraying sound similiar to the ones KCC Kip Cruising Club have. They are superbly made, think in San Diego USA. However they are so stiff that some members keep them as spare rudders. :sailing :sailing

I intend now flying mine from the backstay as it clatters off the mast and rigging or when sailing thought it was going to punch a hole in the sail. Yes my mainsail has been up on occasion. It does come fitted with toggle and eye so at least is easy to fly and it does not end up in bottom of Loch Fyne. :) :)

Nick are any of the Bluemoment burgees available or have I got to go through a black balling process in order to get one?
