Echo Sounder

Post by Nick »

.
Finally went mad and bought a brand new NASA Target echo sounder with transducer.

Those who have read the previous extensive correspondence will know that no. 1 suspect for the interference since fitting the new engine is the alternator and that ferrite rings have failed to fix it. New cunning plan is to fit new transducer and run the transducer cable nowhere near the alternator. Will this work? Or are the spikes likely to be coming through the power cable and have I wasted my money (again . . . :violin:)

Any other suggestions?

My transducer is forward of the keel - about as far from the alternator as is possible. Not sure if the proximity of the cable is an issue as long as the cable itself is up to spec. Have you tried the old transducer elsewhere ie where you can eliminate possible causes of malfunction?

The transducer on Fairwinds is also forward of the keel - interference is picked up thrugh the cables.

Nick, definatly route the cable well away from any other electrical cables.
Other than that, I dont really know a lot about electrical interferances.
I have a Clipper duet and most of the time it flashes "Out" especially in depths of over 50m and I dont know why or have never actually found a valid reason why it does it.

PS have the bit if teak for you but left it in the boat this eve, so will get tomorrow and post it on the next morn.

Hi Eamonn,

I now have a wee bit of teak, so you don't have to post me that bit - although if you do I promise to put it to gbood use at some point.

Most cheaper echo sounders - which definitely includes the NASA ones - will read 'Out' in more than 50m.

My seafarer never did?Nor an egle fish finder?

I almost bought a nasa clipper depth on Saturday it was 40€ more than the Target but at 199€ special price still out of reach for me.My eagle depth cost 80€ 4 years ago as it dose today works well dosent need to be fixed has a good B&W display, ive never seen it say "out"when it shows over 150meters i switch it off!Unless im crossing a large bay

Really good post saved me 200€ i havent got the nasa dose sound "fragile" pity as id love one they look expensive aboard!Unlike my ultra reliabale Eagle which replaced one bougt in 1985 to supliment my seafarer which i had to buy a box to fit it to that it remained waterproof result i used the self contained fishfinder the seafarer consigned to the locker

PS. On friday i was wondering how i would manage then a German offered to buy my bickerton bike i said no he offered me a di-blasi & 600€!! the di-blasi is a bit big & heavy but ideal to move a 20l jerry can of red or white on the low solid crossbar!

Apart from the huge price the bickerton is a very good bike i see why there so popular even at the price they sell for.The di-blasi at the price is also very good indeed i hope

Dunno.

Not fitted yet and then I will have to wait until we are in the water to find out.

I installed one of the Clipper echo sounders 2 weeks ago. Seemed allright but now you've got me worried.

Spuddy you think that's bad, last season I hit a rock while my Clipper duet was showing 1.7m ukd, but alas not to worry it was a penicle of rock
I checked the duet after against a lead line and it was out by about 0.1m, 4" aprox, in a 7m depth, not too bad.

Not sure Dave, it was behind the Eileens in Millport bay, I have never had reason to enter there until that night when dropping someone off to my mates bilge keeler in the dark, had been in the same spot 20min earlier with no problem but obviously the tide was down to the bones by the secont time round, on checking keel after lift out, another 2" and I would have missed it.
