Anchor rode

Post by Silkie »

I currently have 30m chain spliced to 30m nylon octo/anchor/multiplait so that I usually lie to all chain at a reasonable scope in a "typical" anchorage. I'm inclining towards the notion that the rode should always have a bit of stretch in it and am thinking of reducing the chain to 20m so that I would usually have at least 5-10m of nylon out in the hypothetical typical anchorage.

What thinkest thou?

I think I would agree with Nick (though not necessarily twice). I used to use a chain / nylon rode, but always became a bit anxious about chafe when I was lying to the nylon. The trouble is that in the sort of weather when you want maximum scope the boat tends to sheer about and unless your anti-chafe precautions are very reliable (I used to use Scotrail sleeper facecloths which maybe wasn't best) there is a real risk of cutting the warp. A nylon snubber, however, works fine, and leaves the chain there to take over if the snubber parts. Mine did in a F9, but that's another story...

I like all chain, I have 60m on FC. Therefore I have a bridle with 18mm 3 strand on a hook, made off the the 2 forward cleats. The chain is secured centrally, but I take about 9 inches of slack in the chain with the nylon.
I only do that when it looks like bad weather though. Normally we just let out the chain and thats it.

Take your point about chafe Dave although these days you can get some very nice anti-chafe pads with velcro closures.

Of course with only 30m chain, "in the sort of weather when you want maximum scope", I'll be lying to the nylon anyway and was only thinking of changing the proportions so that this was the case with less scope out.

Incidentally I will be buying new chain, not lopping 10m off the existing! Maybe I should go for 50m of chain, use a snubber when required and have a warp to shackle on in extremis.

Boat Gear Direct seem very competitive, for 6mm anyway.

That's pretty much my approach (although I currently have 40m chain, but would replace with 50m if I ever feel the replacement urge). I have one or two strong warps (aka old climbing ropes) which could be added if things got really desperate, but I hope to never be there.

Reading through this post and preparing for my west coast trip I would be greatful of some good advice.
1) I have a 10kg bruce anchor with 30m of 8mm chain, is this length long enough for a 3.2 tonne displacement?
2)I also have a 15lb cqr as kedge with a couple mtrs of a heavy chain on it, what dia, type, length of warp should I attach to it?
3)I have 4 plastic coated weight lifting discs which I was going to carry as an angel, what length of line would I need to attach to it? I have never ised an angel before, and only ever anchored this boat once at Farland point, and that was an experience!
I am a bit aprehensive about carrying too much weight in the anchor locker after reading HAZ;s post on hull cracks in top.
Thanks, C_W

Dave, if you could get a hold of the hot air guns used for welding the single membrane roofing pvc you could weld in the window and all the joints, great strong and completly waterproof job, no stiching needed.
My mate is going to make a hull hugger from the sm pvc and use foam blocks.

Most interesting.

WTFs a "hull hugger", though?
