Preassure

Post by Clyde_Wanderer »

Where can I find the precise press for any given time at or near my location?
Want to calibrate a barrometer.
Thanks C_W

Also

BBC used to show readings from a location near you but now they have changed their site I can't find it.

Volmet transmits it constantly for all the airports, so sail to Troon and listen to Prestwick.
I wait until a day when the pressure is even over the country and tweek to suit. We've got about 6 of varying types
and to be honest it's the trend rather than the actual figure I'm interested in, that's why I got a couple of elecronic jobbies that have a 24 hour graph. One (Vion) even has an audible/visual alarm for yachties.

Thanks BT and Rowana.
Must admit Rowana that the only part of that one I recognised was my Initials in the left colum.

Yes Bill I agree about the trend.
I have a cheapo Ascot from Aldi or Lidle, (cant remember which) but it is generally very acurate, or was until the batt went down.
But all singing and dancing again, will moniter it over the next couple wks for acuracy.
Thanks everyone.

Incidently watched Monty Hall's great escape episode1 tonight, and yes something like that would be a dream come true, though a bathroom would be throwen for good measure.
Has the next episodes been released yet? cant find any.

I think from the context that the first figures are day of the month and time of day (military nomenclature), and the last is sea level pressure, but I can't work out what some of the middle bits are. Translation, anyone?

Here's the translation from today at 1020 -

EGPK 091020Z 27013KT 9999 -SHRA FEW010CB SCT025 05/03 Q1003=

EGPK - Prestwick code (EGPD is my local one, Aberdeen)
091020Z - 09 Date, 1020Z time in GMT, UT or whatever it is these days!
27013KT - Wind direction 270deg, 13Kt
9999 - Visibility greater than 10000metres
-SHRA - showers of rain
FEW010CB - Few clouds at 1000ft Cumulonimbus
SCT025 - Scattered clouds at 2500ft
05/03 - 05 is temperature in dec C, 03 is dewpoint
Q1003 - Barometric pressure corrected to sea level in hPa.

I like the website as it shows readings every half hour, and it's easy to pick up trends.

HTH

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive, battery powered, digital instrument to display and record atmos press - something that would show the effect of a front passing through for example?

I already have the usual round brass jobbie that you tap and reset the pointer but I tend to only have a look at that once a day.

I don't want / need a 'weather station'.

I already have digital display which tells me the time, the day, the date, the temp, and the humidity. A cheap silver coloured plastic cased Lidl special but it does the job and looks OK.

If you are happy with a soldering iron, I can recommend this 5 day barograph. This records pressure every hour and plots a graph of the last 120 readings. It also displays the current reading as digits in mbar or hPa. There's also the NASA copy.
To follow my article above, you'll need to glance at Part One first. To get the attachments (circuit diagram, program, parts list) you'll need to register on the Picaxe Forum - it's free.
Any questions - my consultancy rate is quite reasonable

I assume this one? Vion A4000, at just sub £75.

The Picaxe projects seem very interesting, not sure that I have the patience.

Who are Nasa copying? That unit seems to be around £139.

Thanks to you both.

Bought the £14.99 weather station from Lidl last Thurs. You can click through the previous 12 hourly readings of pressure. The little graph showing pressure history is annoying as it continually refreshes. Maybe I've got a setting wrong. I have a suspicion that another forumite bought one too so I'll look forward to his opinion.

Ash, the Liddle or Aldi one I have for about 1 1/2 yrs now is very similar in features but different layout.
The Pressure history graph does keep refreshing so you arent doing anything wrong there.
The time is transmitted from that place near Frankfurt, it also has a remote temp/hygro sensor, which is handy for locating the coolest part of boat to keep milk fresh and beer cool, :)
