Any curtains near the cooking facilities are an obvious fire hazard. So, when you decide they need washing, it makes good sense to set the washing machine nice and hot (and not 30 gegrees anyway), thereby shrinking the curtains so they won't fit and you can reasonably throw them away, eliminating any danger of them ever catching fire.
