Is it best to mount the scanner on the mast or, on a pole on the stern?

The wee modern scanners do lend themselves to being mounted on an erection up the back, but there is a limit. I had a 24" furuno scanner on a salvaged boom section 14' long which was about enough. Great for all the other antennae and aquagen and O/b derrick, stern light etc. but I did get mast ghosts. If you've already got the kit and it's powerful enough, it may need to go up the mast. do the geometry and see what 24 miles and the horizon look like. I only took mine down from the mast because I wanted to have the option of cutter rig, and it was in the way. You can cut the cable and re-join it with impunity.

The boat is a cutter rigged deck saloon, consequently a mast mount would have to be quite high as would a pole on the stern. ho hum.sahona wrote:The wee modern scanners do lend themselves to being mounted on an erection up the back, but there is a limit. Higher the better until you get to the stage of noticing the pendulum effect of the weight. As I said, look in the "dipping lights" table to get optimum height for your max range. You'll be above the inner forestay anyway.
