New Cockpit Grating

Post by BlowingOldBoots »

New grating by A&R Boatbuilding, Ardrishaig. The old stuff was falling to bits, was a glued construction and had been glue repaired many times. I tried to glue together the seats again but each slat just failed one after the other.

The new grating is all jointed. It looks shiny because it is soaking wet after a downpour, otherwise it is just plain teak. Decided to go with slats for the seats, initially for cost reduction (less joints to cut), but I think it looks much better and is less fussy compared to all grating. A&R also fitted the square section around the pedestal, permanently glued down, which allows the grating to be easily lifted. Previously the grab rail on the pedestal had to be removed to allow the front section to be lifted. I also opted to keep the cockpit gutters open at the edges to allow water to drain easier. Although the boat is a centre cockpit, I have taken a big wave on the bow resulting in a deluge over the spray hood, rare, but it has happened more than once, hence no restrictions to get water out ASAP.

All in all, I am very happy with the outcome.
