Success in Tobermory

Post by cpedw »

I enjoyed a Lynne Truss (not Liz - I checked with Google; their similar names are a minefield for pedants across the land) moment in Tobermory. Walking past the posh, fairly new hotel, I noticed "Local Whiskey" chalked on an A board outside. So I smudged the e.

Returning later from the Macdonald Arms, I was please to note that the line on the A board had been rewritten correctly on both sides. I had interfered with only one side.

Kames Hotel had a "whiskey of the week" chalkboard behind the bar. I had to wind my neck back in when I realised this week's was a bourbon. No idea why a Scottish pub on the tourist trail is promoting American guff, but hey ho. Its definitely lost its "local" feel since the new owners took it over. The rougher bar at the end where the pool table was is now a restaurant, and I doubt the Kyles Athletic guys walk in and start drinking with their kit still on after a shinty match.

Kyles shinty men always drink in the Shinty Bar. The kids may go to the Kames.

Round about 2012 or so, the Kames had the McAuley, Camanachd and Celtic cups behind the bar when Kyles were the team to beat. The then owner let me behind the bar to pose with them for photos which I used to antagonise my Kingussie workmate. Saturday afternoons they would cover the pool table with pies and sausage rolls and both teams would walk to the Kames after the game. Big red welts on their heids where they'd caught a sore one. The Royal was definitely the historic home of the team, but Kames had supplanted them round about then. Is it all back at the Royal again then?

There's no longer a pool table in the Kames, let alone a proper bar. The Kames has positioned itself as a restaurant with bar, leaving the drinking to be done in either the Shinty Bar or the Tighnabruaich Hotel.

The Royal Hotel's Shinty Bar has been the traditional howf for the Shinty.

I've missed that. When was McGoochan's burnt down, what state is it in now, what's the prognosis? (With not getting on the water this year I'm losing touch.) OTOH since LOTI took over the Mishnish it's greatly improved.

Late May.

Last weekend it still looked much like it did after the fire. But the owner has been reported as intending to rebuild.

Too much information- the village shop now only sells Mars Bars to locals they know after yer last escapade.

Inexplicably they will still sell Snickers bars to anyone
