6ft of 4x3.
Nothing fancy as it will end up being scuffed and scraped and generally trashed

I use standard t&g floorboard as I had some lying about. 6ft is a good length, but make sure you can store it and retrieve it easily. I think mine are about 4ft to easily get into the cockpit locker.

A suitable length of tanalized sw decking, (Hardwood is also availabe) needs no painting or further treatment, the ribbed surface tends to disguise the inevitable scuffs. It just needs to be long enough to span two piles but best to make it as long as your stowage arrangement permits.

Some folks use a scaffold board/
I've got a length of purlin from a loft conversion. No real need for it in these southern semi-suburban zones but if going a bit more remote I tie it up along a shroud

Agreed, about 6 to 7ft of 1" by 8" .
Good weight is worthwhile for piled steel piers - or rafting on a fishing boat.
Ours is tied off inside the stanchions on Stbd, like an extra bit of toe-rail.

Thanks for all the help, I was wondering if it needed to be something serious in hardwood, glad that something like scaffold will do the job.

If you do decide to go for scaffold board (I wouldn't) Glasgow Wood Recycling (forget the name of the street but between Dunbarton Rd. and the river) usually have stacks of it, its life on staging is limited and then it has to be used for something else, (in our case, raised beds in the veg. garden)

That's where I got mine a few years ago, a spot of varnish keeps it from going dark.
