I used to like picking up a copy of 'All At Sea', but they got into problems and came back without seemingly the circulation from before. I used to get mine from one the chandlers in Pwllheli, but they stopped getting it and I no longer get to pop in there anyway.

I found it similar to the fishing news in the way it reported, it had no illusions of trying to be a glossy with pretty pictures and little editorial, IPC have become so vanilla now they are laughable.

Sailing Today, appears to be staffed by people on our side, YM would probably take the Duchy's point of view on the anchoring debate, where as ST reported it in adult language and dared to use words like fraudulent.

ST also have a habit of taking stuff out of the box and seeing if it 'does what it says on the tin'. I get the feeling ST is what YM was when Des was editing. ST have the bottle to suggest a product is a load of rubbish, YM would say something like it didn't quite perform as well as expected so we have given it best budget buy!

The pinnacle of testing for YM was the pre boat show instrument tests, they just listed the info from the side of box, most likely from the manufacturers website. I have kept that edition, as it stops me when I consider renewing my subs. I am not going to mention the benjenbav; sorry, boat tests, I love the ST focus on a 2nd hand boat they do each month.

YM 2008 schedule, monthly editorial>>>

Dec - London Boat Show Earls court, boat test benny 31.2

Jan - What was new at earls court, boat test benny 31.4

Feb - London Boat Show Excel, boat test benny 33.2

Mar - What was new at Excel, boat test bav 33.3, bigger than the benny 33.2

Apr - pre season checks, how to unlock your boat and clean. Written for 5 year olds with accompanying double page picture of a boat, arrows point you toward the heads and galley in case you're too stupid to spot them for yourselves. Remove new oil put in in November as we like to see quite ridiculous waste, ex-dumper truck diesels are extremely pinickity about oil left for 3 months, just because they run 24/7 in deserts without a glitch, you need to be so precious! , boat test, another AWB

May - Anti foul tests, none worked, but it was not the manufacturers fault, best buy cruiser uno, biggest advertiser see!

Jun - Beaulieu boat jumble special, how to over react and get far too excited about about buying stuff. We teach you how to ask for something, pay the man and walk away with a new thingy. How did you cope without us.

Jul - bring your boat alongside another pontoon*

Aug - bring another boat to another pontoon from a slightly different angle*, Big news, a yacht in the Solent sails without the engine running, we ask, "is this reckless behaviour in light of the lack of control, should the laws be changed?"

Sep - Southampton boat show special

Oct - What was new at Southampton, big editorial special; We follow a family who cruised this summer from marina to marina within the Solent.. How did they cope when the shore power was turned off and they had to rely on engine power only.

Nov - Big equipment test special, we give the best buy to our biggest advertiser and the one with the easiest to copy spec sheet. No equipment was powered up for this test. Laying up special, inane points on how to lock your saloon and go home. Change oil.

Dec - Earls yawn court yawn special.

Please note the absolute lack of acknowledgement of anything boat related between the Solent and Jockland. *Please also note, lack of any acknowledgement that some people actually keep boats on moorings and also lack of any tutorials on actually sailing your boat!

ad infinitum!

.. I find there's lttle readable in YM now, certainly not £3.90's worth. JIngs the amount of advertising in it should mean its a freebie

Tee hee!
I'm sensing you're quite upset about this. :hammer:

I have to agree (haven't bought one for years) but am unable to find so much energy to say so. :)

The only magazine I get these days, is Good Old Boat, interesting reading even if it does have an American slant (no I don't have anything against American's, their spelling is as bad as mine)

WHSmug at Paddington have for years provided, foc, all that i've ever wanted to know from the yotting press. There are branches up north and if youse know yer postcode the nearest is here although you can generally be assured of finding one at a train station.

a few years ago, Paddington Smug's moved the yotty mags up to the top shelf alongside "Indian Babes" and other Desmond publications which meant you had to peruse YM etc whilst in the company of less salubrious people.

the scratch card inevitably falls out which gives you the chance of winning an IPC prize before returning the mag back to the rack and catch your train. I've never won anything.
