Anyone want to take it over?

I am fed up with hosting it.

Nick,I am really grateful that you have kept the forum going for so long. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a lot of contributors - even you are more visible on TOP than here. I, for one, haven't a scoobie on how to host a forum. So thank you for what you have given all of us and may the world be kind to you.

Just delete it. Get rid of the liability. Free yourself from the hassle of hosting this place and not have to deal with personal data, data breach risks, and the potential hassles around that.

It's a shame, but that is the way it is. You will feel better for it. All the best, enjoy the sun.
What's that? Dunno! Should we be worried about that? Dunno! How? Ah dunno!

What are the running costs?

As a refugee from TOP I would hate to see this place close. Sailing Anarchy is a shambles.

Hi Sandy,

The running costs are mostly those associated with the BlueMoment domain name and the hosting. If someone wanted to take the forum over then they could register another domain, set up hosting with someone and transfer files and database via FTP - it is not too difficult.

https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2647870

Here's a £7/month hosting package specifically aimed at phpBB sites:
https://krystal.io/hosting/phpbb

I would suggest registering a .com domain of your choice - this would cost approximately £18 per year. So - total cost would be around £8.50/month. If you manage to grow the site this could easily be recouped through advertising.

There would be some work involved to prune all the spurious users from the database and update the phpBB installation to the latest version, but phpBB is well supported and this is easily done following instructions, you might need two or three hours of concentrated work. I would be happy to provide support for this.

I would continue to provide a link to the new address from the main BlueMoment site, with no requirement to provide a link back.

I would love to see someone take this over, it has potential way beyond the teuchter Ardfern contingent, but I am streamlining my business to concentrate on only hosting sites that actually pay for themselves. I am keeping the BlueMoment domain however unless someone makes me an offer.

I'll second what Marisca has said. Also would love to see the site continue. Back to sailing again after a few years out but in the Clyde at the moment.

Well, if the total cost is £8.50 a month or £100 per annum and someone is willing to take on the responsibility then if ten people chipped in £10 a year that would cover it.

Sandy??

I'd certainly be interested. I have some very rusty IT skills and already run a domain name linked to a blog on blogger.

Let me give it some thought.

Nick and I have been emailing and I've come to the conclusion that I won't pick up the task of forum management as I really want to go sailing.

The forum runs itself apart from occasional updates, an hour a week would be more than enough to plan for.
