I think these are very good reasons or decisions to get the boat closer to home. Moreover, I think the "get some jobs done" could be key. My own experience of refitting an older boat concluded that the boat being near my home was the only way forward in a reasonable cost and time frame. For example, mooring fees at a marina disappeared, offset somewhat by the trucking charges to/from my home). Perhaps you have a lower cost base nearer where you live than Ardfern. The progress on my refit was exponentially faster near my home than travelling to / from Largs (where I was based at the time). There is no doubt that if you think work needs done, and you are going to do it yourself, then get the boat nearer home.
A round trip for me between South Lanarkshire and Craobh is 300 miles, about 8.5 gallons of diesel (39 litres) at 1.76 per litre (average from RAC) equates to £68 per trip, which on the face of it is still good value considering there could be more than one person and a pile of stuff in the car. I used to crack on, but now I have alight foot on the throttle.
Hope you have a great sailing season and perhaps we will meet up when you're up at Ardfern at some point. I do need to top up my boat whisky locker as it all came out when the new saloon table was fitted.

Well - I can certainly help you clear some space by taking some whusky off yer hands!
Parking the boat at my yacht club will cost me around £300 for the winter and its 10 minutes from home.
She needs to come out next winter because she has been in for 4 years now - probably a low chance of osmosis given her age and layup but I think its still best to let some air around her bottom - if you'll pardon the expression.
I need to rewire the domestic stuff - it needed doing 25 years ago according to the survey so better get it done. My cousin is an electrician and I do his I.T. stuff and accounts from time to time so it would be a labour exchange - long time since I've been near one of those!
I did say I was cured of sailing the Irish Sea but its not so bad - 3 days of grunt to get to Portpatrick, IOM and then Fleetwood - not having a deadline of having to be in work on Monday is a great relief so we could take in a few other waypoints - not Barrow!!! Or Workington.
We are paid up in Ardfern until September so we will be around for the duration and yes - I hope we get to share some time - and drink!!
