I get it, I really do. However, I just cant see me holding my iPhone up on a windy day as the rain lashes the technology and turns all the water sensitive dyes the wet colour and simultaneously ruining the warranty. Plus its just another gadget to put in the ever growing bag of technological hardware that the digital age was supposed to remove.

There is an App that allows the microphone to measure wind speed from the noise; no additional hardware required and only 79p.

That's exactly where my head is, very nice but do I need it.

Like you say I have the app that reads wind speed, I also have a wee thing that spins like mad most of the time at the top of my mast and tells me speed and direction.

I do fancy the idea of a digital weather station for the boat, but not found anything yet that's making me spend..

hook up to airmar's weathercaster software and off you go.
should you need to replace the masthead anemometer, this could be a good option

That's the very thing, I also need to replace my very old masthead anemometer, but I think I would like both :)
But until the oil industry sorts itself out I may have to try and keep the old one running. :(
