Selling a MAB in West Scotland.

I'm selling Chiron next season and I'm 350 miles away so I'm thinking of bunging her in a brokerage.

So, do I move her to somewhere on the Clyde so she is easier for folk to view or leave her where she is in Tayvallich?

If I do move her somewhere convenient does anyone know of deals on berthing for brokerage boats?

This is for a 1979 Centaur which may fetch £6000 if I'm lucky, so keeping the costs down, within reason, makes sense.

Thoughts chaps?

Also got a 20' trail sailer to get rid of but Apollo Duck or B&O should be ok for that:)

A swinging mooring at TV would be OK if you were local and could bring her on to the pontoon for a potential viewing, but not ideal for a brokerage sale.

A west coast marina brokerage? Craobh would benefit from the link with Kip.

A trip to the Clyde for the Spring Second Boat Show? Think most of the 3 would give you a month berthing. If you need to pay, then Ardrossan likely to be cheapest. Kip likely to have best footfall.

You should have been quicker and sold to K T L !!!!!

I did offer her to Dylan, he has a phobia of Volvos and thinks a Centaur with an original engine is only worth £2K.

I want what he paid for one with a newer engine.

I didn't know there was another 2nd hand boat show in the spring, I'll look into that tomoz, thanks for the pointer.

BTW, forecast shyte for this W/E, may delay our trip to Tarbert a week.

I sold my previous boat at Kip. It was on a trailer and the guy from the brokerage said that parking would be free while the boat was on sale. Then they billed me for storage and the previous conversation was denied. Moral: get any deals on offer put in writing.

I put my Leisure 17, on trailer, into the second hand boat show at Kip many years ago. It didn't cost me anything but ISTR that it could only stay at Kip for a limited time. I then towed it away and stored it at a farm which did caravan storage. Sold it privately from there.

Not sure Brokers will take it on at that value. When I was selling Booby Trapper I was looking selling at £8K (those were the days.....and I got it ) They said 10K was about the lowest they would take on. Give it a try on some of the free sites, Apolloduck, Boatsand outboards etc.

Brokerages seem to be raising the threshold on the value of boats they are willing to handle - or give preferential berthing to - so I would look for somewhere cosy and cheap, then be prepared to wait until the right person comes along, preferably being able to use it in the meantime (it took us us a year last time). For you, that may mean sailing South until the ice melts in order to get some use, but at what cost? - on the other hand if you move South you may get more interest...
Lets face it, that pile of money we invested to play with for a while and then cash in when the pension got a bit thin, has gone to merde...

I can only find reference to the annual Boat Show too, we may end up at that in October!
My main problem is maintaining 2 boats, I would like to sail too. We will be sailing Seminole which is tied up in Tarbert, and fettling her.
Chiron is on the mooring in Tayvallich and is a pain to view there, but not as bad if I'm in Tarbert when someone wants to look.
I could also sail Chiron too but want to get most of the personal effects off so she looks tidy, or as tidy as a MAB can look.
I'll try the DiY route first but if it gets to the end of next season I'll have to rethink.
I had fleetingly considered sailing Chiron down to Preston which is easier for us to get to and cheaper storage but I'm not keen. It may be the place to offload a project boat for £2000 though. but I'm not that desperate yet, and she is a decent boat despite her failings.
I have put an ad on the Westerly Owners site but that has a limited audience.

A quick look at the Michael Schmidt brokerage site shows a few sail boats at the low end of the market.

Have you thought of selling from Tarbert, there may be a decent deal going as Seminole's there already - and you can look after both boats from the one car (or free bus) journey. It's also easier to get to the 'boatshows' from Tarbert, even if you have to come back again (a few times).

Ivor (intermittently of this forum) has recommended Western Horizon which is based in Tarbert so I'll look into that chap. Ivor has bought and sold through them.

Swapping boats and moorings is a good option, Tarbert is reasonably priced for annual berths. I wouldn't have both boats in Tarbert together when there is a spare mooring at TV.

James Watt Dock brokerage seem to have some lower value boats and may do a decent deal on storage - might be worth a phone call.

I sold my vega relatively quickly, using free ads on Apollo Duck and B&O, backed up by a simple wordpress blog where. I could upload much more information and photos. Was well worth the small amount of effort involved.
