Crown Estate removes unlicensed moorings from Kilchattan Bay

A Crown Estate posse was out on the water in Kilchattan Bay, Bute, last week removing unlicensed moorings. Holders of unlicensed moorings had been advised to contact Bidwells, the Crown Estate Commissioners’ managers in Scotland, to obtain a license, and were warned that moorings which remain unlicensed were likely to be removed by the Commissioners without further notice.

That'll have to be paid for by upping the charges on the registered moorings I guess. You just can't win can you?

Nor should they win! I have no time for unlicensed moorings as they can be be dropped in or encroach on recognised anchoring areas. Perfectly happy Old Troll to pay £40 per annum to keep order and control over the coastline .

So is that (£40) the actual cost of Crown dues per mooring then?
Where would I enquire if I can install a legit mooring in a particular bay where there are allready dozens of moorings?

Eammon,
The figure of £40 is for a mooring licence administered by a mooring association. Each association, recognised by Bidwells who are the Crown Commission agent in Scotland, has juristiction over a defined area of seabed.
So... if you want a mooring in one of the more popular spots you will need to apply through an association. Beware; the £40 is the licence fee. Associations have the right to levy "administration charges" which they can set themselves, subject to their constitution which they can write themselves.
There are areas not covered by an association, in which case you can apply for an individual mooring which has a licence fee of £80 pa.
My mooring is an individual one in an area covered by an association only by virtue of my ownership before the association was set up, so I pay £80.
As Groucho nearly put it... "why would I want to be a member of an association which would have me as a member...?"

I liked it when you could sling yer 'ook & chain wherever you damned wanted. In the area I was, if you were stupid enough to get too close to existing stuff you would politely be asked to move. Those whoo failed to show due condsideration for existing moorings might suffer frequent loss of their bouys & riser.

Why would anyone need a Crown Bureaucracy to manage something as basic & simple as moorings, unless they were congenitally disorganised or uncontrollably argumentative.
