Hello

Post by Mercian »

Hi, I am southern softie from Kent who sails an R32 from the Medway. Planning to start circumnavigation of the UK in 2014 with the aim of spending a couple of summers in Scottish waters. In the meantime looking to benefit from you guys local knowledge and by way of reciprocation can offer a reasonable knowledge of the Medway area.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I have to confess my heart sank when I saw another post waiting for approval as we experienced an explosion of shoe spam this week and I have just reset the anti-spambot question. I thought the new question was also useless, but I see you are human and have no shoe advice.

Anyway . . . you have come to the right place for local knowledge re. Scottish sailing. Welcome aboard.

That was a bit of a "you'll have had your tea" welcome, Nick. While us denizens have enjoyed the shoe and Mini-Cooper spam, it probably makes no sense at all to Mercian who thought he was joining a sailing forum.

Welcome Mercian. There are a lot of helpful, knowledgeable posters on here. Unfortunately, they tend to hide these good qualities.

Welcome to the forum, Mercian. I must admit it's a few years ago now since I sailed in and out of the Medway. OK, it's 40 years ago, and I was on BP Tankers in those days! Someone told me that the "Cat & Cracker" in Grain is no more, and it's houses now. I've had many a good night in there! There is (or possibly was!) also a lovely little pub in Allhallows, the Crown I think, that I used to have a few "refreshments" in.

Which way are round are you planning your circumnavigation? I'm based in Peterhead, so I can give you a bit of information on the east coast of Scotland. There are a few members here in the Firth of Forth area, and a lot on the west coast, so you should get plenty of info.

Look forward to seeing you in Scottish waters.

Thanks all for the welcome.

Rowana, yes the refinery has long gone, it's a container port and an LPG terminal, so we still get tankers. There is also talk of an airport! I will be going left about in the wake of the famous Dylan Winter, though I expect to overtake him at some point as I will not have the time to poke into every nook and cranny on the way round! I will be refitting over the next two winters intending to make a start on the trip in 2014.

Welcome to the forum. There are, naturally, a few rules that need adhering to.
I drink Pipers Gold and the Jura. We dropped the rule about Nick having first dibs with the womenfolk but getting your hand in your pocket for the odd round will do you no harm.
