As I understand it, from a late 1960s town planning book that raved about Cumbernauld, the centre is meant to look from the distance like an ocean liner breasting the waves... (The circular windows represent portholes...) It's always struck me as having a closer similarity to a coal fired power station's ash plant.

You're right! There IS a similarity there !
