CalMac ch16 alerts

Oh the power of the Blue Moment Forum. On my travels last week from the Kyles to Campbeltown, Lamlash/Brodick with poor weather and good sailing I was interested to hear on every visit CalMac now contacting Ardrossan Harbour on CH16 prior to the usual conversation on CH12.

Slight thread drift - why does the Brodick - Ardrossan ferry always call Ardrossan Harbour Control on 16 just to be told "Go channel 12" by the guy with the most dreary voice in the world. Why doesn't she just call in on 12? Maybe it's to wind up the guy with the dreary voice.

I feel the call/broadcast is also intended for the ears of other nearby vessels,(motor and sail alike) who would most likely to be monitering 16 as opposed to 12.
And yes the most dreary form of oral communication I have ever heard.

Thursday went between Ladys Rock and Lismore just as the IOM overtook us, and no call. Was in the area and monitoring 16 for three days and regularly heard the usual 'Oban Bay by the North Entrance' malarkey but nothing else.


Is this mythical?

No!

I reported what I heard over several days. I can't prove it as I took no recordings and have no witnesses since I was single handing, but I am certainly not making it up.

As to why it started and why it has now apparently stopped I have no idea.

Couldn't really say. I don't particularly remember a Geordie accent, but it was more the content I was concentrating on.

Old Troll recognised a broadcast similar to that I described, but did not catch all the detail. Did anyone else hear these broadcasts and be willing to confirm that I'm not becoming delusional?

Perhaps it's a new tactic they've developed for situations in between all OK and 5 blasts i.e. "I'm not too sure what this WAFI is going to do - let's see if we can make him think about it a bit more" and is therefore something they only do occasionally rather than the Oban bay announcements which are routine since you can never be sure what's coming around the corner.

I certainly never heard anything unusual last weekend despite being parked in Oitir Mhor bay on Friday night.
