I make it 31 nm further from Oban via the Sound of Harris. However, it depends on your plan. If you are going non-stop then via the Sound of Barra is quicker, but if you plan to day-sail it then the SOH route offers far more possiblilities, with potential stopovers at Tobermory, Canna, Lochmaddy, Taransay . . .

I've done it both ways, non stop from Loch Creran via Barra Head and day sailing via Canna and Taransay.

Pretty ambitious to sail to St Kilda from Tobermory in a bucket. Commendable, though.
