The weather has been so poor we have not ventured as far as Bute this season. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

It was so poor that I didn't venture there yesterday after all. Launching on Monday now.

Yes I am always at the back of the class ….. and no! ….. I don’t always pay attention ….. but lads! ….. OK we’ve had the odd couple of horrendous days ….. but! ….. there have been some great sailing ‘weather windows’ ….. so! ….. what has actually been the problem.
I mean …. even I’ve been out and that’s quite rare these days.

It's that damn "work" business, and the quite unreasonable expectation that I should do certain things at certain times and in certain places to avoid starvation. Still, I've managed to get boat #1 in the water and it's looking good for #2 tomorrow.

When three days a week are taken up in watching the youngest grandwean and we live some distance away from the boat the weather windows narrow somewhat. Throw in birthdays and first communions at weekends and the sailors of the family get squeezed a wee bit. Had a nice sail today down the River Nith with a friend who was getting ready to take his boat from Kingholm Quay to Kippford tomorrow.

I'm trying to persuade a friend with a motor boat at Kippford to do a trip to Kingholm Quay and back, but it's a displacement bot and at 6kt it looks as if it will need four tides to do the trip...

Is that Glencaple Quay? Kingholm Quay was just as badly silted until the Port of Dumfries Development Group took drastic action with a big digger.

The big problem is that the Nith Navigation Trust has fallen into desuétude. The former trustees are all dead and didn't appoint successors, but the defunct trust still has responsibility for the river.

It was with a friend who is the secretary of the Dunfries Cruising Club on his Virgo Voyager. Kingholm is quite crowded at the moment with the new pontoon providing berths for a good number of boats. The picture is, as was indicated, Glencaple which is still used by a couple of fishing boats.

We spent the weekend in Rothesay. Motored down on Thursday evening in a flat calm. Friday it was blowing a gale - F7 at times. Saturday was a better day but still quite gusty, but we stayed in the harbour with the intention of sailing up to Portavadie on Sunday Morning and staying out until wednesday. Phone call on Saturday night - family illness - Mrs Dougie's dad - so back to Rosneath with the wind on our nose as far as the Cloch. From there to Rosneath we had a lovely sail but are now back in Dumfries.

Four putting the first at Southerness this morning after two great shots made me wish we were still afloat - 44 putts in all - beating up the firth seems quite pleasant compared to such purgatory!

The weather however has been truly brilliant.
