The latest copy of PBO, No 548, June 2012 has an article on pages 92 / 93 describing an adventure of taking a 21ft converted ship's boat, retro fitted with a Bermudan rig, under the bridge on a northbound passage.
They were OK to clear the bridge, but not the telephone wires. The keel stepped mast had been extended so they managed to remove the bottom bit and drop the mast down and angled enough to get through.
They controlled the speed of the boat by using the tender as a drag tug.
Silkie probably knows the author - he's based in Dunstaffnage ( but has moved on from the converted lifeboat )
