Why don't people eat Onion Bhajis anymore?

Post by Mark »

So I was in my the India Gate, my local Balti.

Bloke at the next table had a Kima Nam and a Prawn Madrass. So far so good.

But then I was shocked to see that he ordered a side order of Sizzling Chicken Tikka.

What the hell was wrong with the Onion Bhajis? I hope his shed falls down, the weirdo.

(Yes, I'm bored.)

Put 'em up, put 'em up!

Depends where you eat. Years ago onion bhajis were the only thing offered as picky starters in the London restaurants, while we had pakora in many flavours up here in Scotland. When I mentioned them to English owners, they either didn't want to know or said they were peasant food, but they were ALWAYS tastier and more varied than bhajis.
It takes a while for an idea to migrate properly, I was treated with incredulity when I asked for a Balti up here. "That means bucket" was the reply, but they're everywhere now.

Next time you're up here, a visit to the ShishMahal (Glasgow) will correct your errant ways.

Ganpat's Chai Shop had three items on the menu (apart from tea) all served on a saucer with a teaspoon and local bread optionally; beans bhaji - various beans in a runny sauce; potato bhaji - potato cubes in a dry sauce; mix bhaji (you're ahead of me here I see) and if you were hungry you could have one of each.

Ambrosia.
