my grandmother had an autograph book from her childhood. Lots of doggerel and charming coloured pictures - labours of love, really - but at the end of the book were two couplets:-

By hook or by crook
I'll be last in this book

and in very very small writing below it

By eggs and by bacon
I'm sure you're mistaken
