Stewart Graham, 46, who owns Inverness-based Gael Force, is just out of hospital after being treated for back injuries incurred in a motorbike accident in Malaysia. He and his wife Trish were intending to sail back to the UK via the Red Sea and the Med, but have now decided it will be safer to sail an extra 9,000 miles round the Cape of Good Hope to avoid running the risk of encountering pirates off Somalia.
Stewart and Trish have been away on their round the world trip for the last 18 months. Stewart said: ""The journey home with a broken back is high risk enough and I'm not keen on adding Somali pirates to the mix."
(OK, it's not exactly 'around the Scottish Coast' - but I thought it was interesting - Ed)

Tackling the Aghulas current with a dodgy back might be more dangerous than pirates. Isn't the old sailing ship route via Rio a better bet?
