MAIB Report on St Abb's Fatal Collision

The MAIB report of the collision between the 11m prawn trawler Homeland and the ro-ro ferry Scottish Viking last August has been published.

In brief, the ferry was the give-way vessel but the OOW did not notice the fishing boat in good time, while the crew of the Homeland were busy with gear aft and did not see the other vessel bearing down on them.

Ouch, a bit of "wrong place, wrong time", really. It does illustrate the need to keep your eyes open at all times - if you possibly can.
