Island Going/extreme golf
Just finished "Island Going" by Robert Atkinson. A book that at first glance appears to be about pre war bird research , specifically about Leach's petrel. It is much more than that , if you are at all interested in the "outliers" , Rona, St Kilda. It gives a suberb and objective view - that may sound dry but I found it moving and humorous. It is full of interest, I never knew ( need to check if Haswell Smith mentions it) that the lighthouse keepers on the Flannans maintained a 5 hole course - now that would be a round of golf to aim for

There's no mention of it in my copy of H H-S, but I do have a feeling that I have heard this mentioned before somewhere - other than in "Island Going" which I haven't (yet) read.

You'd have to send a greenkeeper on ahead though since the grass probably hasn't been cut for forty years.stevepick wrote:the lighthouse keepers on the Flannans maintained a 5 hole course - now that would be a round of golf to aim for

They used to graze sheep there. If they still do it might still be playable. I am not a golfer by any means, but it has a strange attraction.
