I think we are all being a bit over critical because we are expecting more from it and we know more about all the places than most other viewers do. Any none sailers I've spoken to have really enjoyed this and other programs that they've done. If it was 3 professional sailing pundits taking it all too serious no one would be interested in watching.
The only bit that really annoyed me was the way the said they were starting from Greenock when in actual fact they were 25 miles away in Glasgow city centre. Oh and I did get a bit annoyed at all the free whisky they received :x :x

And here's a picture of the man himself, on my boat in 2008. We stopped in Loch Laxford on our way from west to east.

I did the two week "experience" there back in 1969, the year he started up. On one of the expeditions we were issued with food (?) that he had left over from his Golden Globe attempt on English Rose 3.

Well - that is the perfect picture for a caption competition but it would just degenerate so quickly.
I wonder whether the wide smile and the fact that the Ridgeway seems to be concentrating, are related.....

Or is it a grimace and not a smile at all - is pain being felt here?

I've suddenly got this urge to kick Ridgeway square in the goolies and run away. Then I'd just have to do the same to Knox-Johnston, Blyth & King and I'd have the full set.

For many years to come, whenever their glorious names come up I could suck on my pipe wisely and pronounce, "I kicked him in the nuts, you know.".

Then, let them say I never achieved anything.

PS: I watched one of the latest Three Men in a Boat Franchise and quite enjoyed it. (The Correvreckan one) There are far worse things on the Baird Receiving Equipment.

A wise choice. Don't know what some us expected from the programme, but, to me, it came across as nice cheery wee travelogue by three pleasant and mildly amusing individuals. The scenery is just so outstanding it didn't really matter about the "story" line. I liked it.
