Grib on Google Earth

Post by ash »

Accessing Google Earth through the ARC Website gives an opportunity to view a Grib file showing wind info in the Atlantic.

See Here

I haven't been able to access this info myself through my own Google Earth (maybe I need to download an updated version )

How useful, accurate, up to date is this info likely to be?

Wind

Very interesting, I hadn't seen this before. The wind arrows seem to denote strength by varying the arrow length, rather than by altering the number of fletches. Is that normal for Gribs?

AFAIK the grib file itself is just a bunch of numbers and it is the viewer which does the graphics. The long/short fletchs are obviously much easier to read. I couldn't find any timing for the info either or even whether current or forecast so of limited value I 'spect.

PS - could you tell us all how good your Delta is for a bit of balance. :D

Gribs and Deltas

Post by DaveS »

Ah, right, that makes sense. I don't suppose Mr. Google necessarily knows much about standard meteorological symbols. I couldn't find the time either, but assumed that that was just my unfamiliarity and that it would be hidden somewhere - but maybe not!

Deltas: comments added to the anchoring thread, trying to avoid one of these "I've got brand X so that's got to be best; everyone else is deluded" type of posts! :)
