Thanks Donald. I wasnt on board at the time but the stand in skipper is an experienced racer and the photo caught him just at the point that they were trying to react. I believe they centred the main, let out the spinny halyard and sheeted in hard on the lazy side.

To my irritation, they won without me!

Letting out the spinnaker halyard will increase the tendency to roll. It allows the head of the spinnaker to pull the masthead sideways (float). If you have the wing keeled 35 it wont have as good a grip as the deeper keeled 35 either. All these things are buttock tightening!!!!

Ermm, quite common, but the kite may not be the same one.

I used to carry three (as ther rules allowed)

0.5oz for light airs, and big in the shoulders
0.75oz general use running and reaching.
1.5oz chicken chute for use in up to, well, ermm, lots of knots, and probably 35.

I inherited one of these three boats ago, it looked like a burst mattress when it was up, which says something about the ability of the previous owner I suppose. (shipman 28 on the Clyde. You know who you are!)
