Cable problem => Engine start

Post by sahona »

Just to let you know in case it's happening to you (slowly)...
Was on a pals Moody 31 at weekend - no engine electrics.
The battery wire - substantial!- had rotted through at the point where it enters the engine compartment under the sole from the nav area where the 1-both-2-off switch is.
The plastic cable sheath hadn't been protected against chafe where it came through the GRP floor, water had turned the copper core green, then the engine had shoogled it to bits.
Gradual deterioration not noticed because the lower piece of engine cover furniture is rarely removed, and with a girl of a certain age, engine starting could reasonably be expected to become a little slow.
Needn't be limited to a M31 of course, so maybe time to wrap a bit of something round any wayward wires and tubes before we slip the ropes and head off for our glorious Summer cruise.
