We had the same problem, but were only thinking about mats-for-boats when cruising, so were limited to the tat from the giftshops in the various places we visited.
I suspect she went and got some totally inappropriate, that are still in the port locker - unused.
maybe we didn't "need" them at all.

Me mum uses that non-skid lattice work stuff, even in Tarbert, it's not exactly wipe clean but it is non-adsorbent so the spilt wine is easy to get off. Come to think about it, she has some well worn place mats for the plates too so I'll shut up now. The bread board keeps the tea pot off the table.

What is wrong with buying some scoot mat and cutting to size and making nice scalopped edges. Just pop them in the sink when doing the washing up and they are clean again. Peg them on the guard wire and they will be dry in no time. Kip Chadlery normally sell by metre off a huge roll.

Sliced Sausage's place mats are really nice, I have had pleasure of using them many times but Mrs Sliced Sausage would have a fit if they were put in the washing up!!!

Very nice, although at 50 quid for four they don't quite meet Jules' criterion regarding a fiver for four being too dear!
