Colvic Watson Jura 35 & Veracity 35 Motor Sailers
Hello All
After the overwhelming response to my first paper on the History of the Colvic Watson Motor Sailer I am currently researching for a part 2.
Have you seen or do you own a Colvic Watson Jura35 or a Veracity 35 in your marina?
Only seven of the Jura Class was built and I have tracked down positivly 4 and 2 possibles, of the Veracity class I have only found 1 but again few were built.
I have just joined this site and if I can help anyone into the history of Colvic Watson motorsailers just ask.
Hope someone can help
Mike

Star of Jura was on Charter from Rhu in the early 1980's - I chartered her for a week.
Pride of Jura was berthed for a while in the mid 80's in Skipool, Fleetwood. She was then sold and renovated somewhere in the South and was the subject of an aticle in Sailing Today

Thanks for the information.
Of The famous seven Jura 35 class I have tracked down six.
Four positivly, 2 waiting confirmation and one to find.
They are:
Star of Jura,Isle of Jura,Spirit of Jura,Pride of Jura,Maid of Jura and Tegwynt.
I am trying to track down 'Pride of Jura' as she was the one built as a demonstrator for
G L Watson when they were in Glasgow.(now in Liverpool).
Star of Jura is currently in France
Pride of Jura 'may be' in Glasson dock and I am waiting for pictures to identify her
Best regards
Mike

Hello Claymore againclaymore wrote:Hi

Thats geat!
I had very confusing reports from various people but from your experiance with Jura boats then you will sort it out, please take your camera and e-mail me as many pictures as you can my address is:
mike@colvicwatson.com
I had a report that Pride of Jura was ashore in Glasson Marina, one guy reported back saying there is no name on the boat he found but the frame she is sitting in says Isle of Jura??.(did not have a camera with him!)
Another e-mail said he thought that was the Maid of Jura??
It does not matter which one as I am trying to track down all three but if we can get the owner to contact me that would sort it out.
On the picture attached if you look above the 'W' of Tegwynt to the right a little you will see a mark, that is the Mould number please write it down also if possible.

On the other hand maybe there are two Jura Class at Glasson Marina??
Hope you have a good visit and look forward to what you find out as I would be surprised if the boat itself does not have a name on somewhere,
one other point is try and see if the deck is GRP or teak, (most important)
Many thanks for your help as I wish I was nearer to visit myself but up in frozen Northumberland
Best Regards

As said before I wrote the 'History of the Colvic Watson Motor Sailer' for the Colvic Watson Owners Group last year and the response was a bit overwhelming to say the least.
People have later sent other bits of information to me and without maybe realising they give me answers to provide in many cases the missing link.
I had so much additional information I decided to do a part 2 but this time concentrating on each of the Colvic Watson boats designs themselves, I have travelled all over the UK to talk to people and I have been working with G L Watson & Co on the historic design side of each of the boats and others in my research and have spent months going through design drawings.
The CW Jura 35 and Veracity35 class were built as the Rolls Royce of the range in the late 70's they were so good that both the builders D M Russel Marine & Aberdour Marine in Scotland had to close as they totaly under estimated the material cost and labour but they are fine boats.
I have found six of the seven Jura class now with a positive identification of 4 of them but the hunt for 'Pride of Jura' goes on.
I have 90% finished part 2 which will go onto the Covic Watson Owners Group site when finished, part 1 can be found at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cwowners/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Our group is free to join and if you click on 'Files' click 'History' you will find part 1.
I also as a part time job do 'Pre-buying Inspection visits' for people interested in Buying a Colvic Watson and this has also led to another problem as some people 'only think' they own a Colvic Watson as many brokers I am afraid do not know what they are selling.
I am hoping with so many members that someone will look in their Marinas and find another one of the Jura class boats.
Thanks you for your interest
Regards
Mike

Re: Colvic Watson Jura 35 & Veracity 35 Motor Sailers
I have recieved a report that a Colvic Watson Jura 35 class Motor sailer blew up blowing the deck and wheelhouse off and then caught fire above no 4 lock on the Crinan canal (southern end) and later sank a few years ago.
It is my beliefe that this was the Maid of Jura and not the Pride of Jura as reported, does anyone have any information on this incident.
I also understand she was raised and removed so I assume declared a total loss.
Any information appreciated.
Mike

Re: Colvic Watson Jura 35 & Veracity 35 Motor Sailers
why don't you call around some of the marine surveyors (Maitland Murray, Survey one, Fraser Noble etc) as one of them is bound to have been involved if there was a big insurance claim.
they may also have been involved in surveying them when they changed hands

Many thanks for your suggestion, I now know this morning it was the Maid of Jura that blew up in August 2000.
But I will also speak to Survey 1 who I know the owner very well.

Yes do speak to Survey One - but don't get into a conversation about sleeping bags, alcohol or New Year.
Time for a picture Claysie?
