Too quiet in here
.
It's so quiet in here that I have been reduced to making the odd non-controversial post in another place.
So far today I have been told I have 'stupid knee jerk reactions', been called a dimwit, an 'awful prig', told I should not dare to pontificate, been offered a free flight to Mogadishu by two separate people and threatened with violence for giving someone some free advice re. their proposed corporate website.
I feel quite bruised. Could someone post a nice soothing whereisit or something similar to soothe me?

Hi Bob,
I was a bit shocked to find you in the vipers' nest . . . . where is everyone this weekend?

Re: Too quiet in here
Duno mate, I'm hiding out of the rain and monitoring BBC Cumbria for news on lake levels. A nice bloke I know has been down and let me know Chiron is still on her mooring but I'm keen to get to do a proper check and get sails off etc. but it's just not fit.
Is it quiet? Been out shopping for xmas cake ingredients and visiting my parents all afternoon so I've not noticed.
NCIS calls TTFN.

I've managed to locate the threads what you're talking about on Scuttlebutt (the chandlers threads, yes?). Quite a battering you're taking there. IMO TOP is a place to steer clear of, now its just got crazy; The Lounge mentality is spreading to all sections.
I haven't posted in TOP for years. This place is much calmer and more sensible with rarely (if ever in fact) a spat. I'd stay here if I were you.
My sympathies.
Nice day to be on the water today down here, how about up the north?
Re: Too quiet in here
The internet is a funny old place.
If someone in real life says something you disagree with your fist instinct is to avoid the point of conflict or if you feel very strongly to tactfully point out the perceived flaws in as friendly manner as possible.
In the internet world it seems the natural instinct is to focus on the flaws like a laser beam, ignoring any points of agreement.
Actually I think that can be quite positive in terms of finding truth but it's also pretty negative in terms of getting on!
No names no pack drill but there was one YBW heated debate over a matter of fact. Each side fought their case hard, mainly with pure abuse.
Some weeks later I met one of the protagonists at a South Coast Marina. I stopped and mentioned YBW and we had a chat. (Nice guy, although you wouldn't know that from his posts) Incredibly during the conversation this thread came up and he actually asked me if I knew the answer 'cos he wasn't sure. Now this was a guy who was vocally supporting one side of the debate - and he didn't actually know!
All of which goes to show, the internet is a weird place, but in many ways good!
On BM we seem to treat each other with similar respect to real world encounters. Which is good but makes for short threads!

Re: Too quiet in here
Seeing as it is the 25th Sunday after Trinity it is traditionally known as 'Stir-Up Sunday'. I am half-way through steaming my stirred up Christmas pud and boiling the fruit and alcohol for a second Christmas cake.

Re: Too quiet in here
I'd assumed that Nick had been noising them up in the lounge, but I hadn't expected it to be a chandlery thread in Scuttlebutt FFS! Can't see it - can anyone offer a link please?JackJ wrote:Nick wrote:.I've managed to locate the threads what you're talking about on Scuttlebutt (the chandlers threads, yes?).
I kind of slowed down and then stopped going in there after someone started ranting and roaring, in a quite vicious way, about my comments concerning Saltcoats harbour. My crime was that I'd suggested that it was for shoal draught boats only and unsuitable for fin keeled yachts. Which it is. IMHO. The guy's stupid comments were only words on a screen, but was quite upsetting in a daft kind of way.
Anyway, life's too short for all that nonsense, so I just do without the hassle.

Re: Too quiet in here
Since posting the above, I've had a PM from a BlueMoment forum member pointing out that the YBW threads concern the kidnapped Chandlers, and not some spat over chandleries. It is too late to pull or edit my earlier post so I sincerely apologise to all concerned.
Subsequently, I've had a look at the threads in question. Truly unbelievable imho. The participants/protagonists are debating issues that may well be being followed by the pirates in Somalia, some of whom do appear to have internet access, with many of their spokepersons being fluent in English and other languages. I'm not advocating censorship, but I do not think that sort of comment in a public yachting/cruising forum is necessarily helpful to the Chandlers.

Re: Too quiet in here
Nick, with respect to the chandlers thread you were in the wrong IMO. Not in your stance, though I think you are misguided in that too~ but I support your right to air what you believe. You did yourself no favours claiming people who don't pledge don't care and then going off on one.
I don't like what is happening over there, the forum is being hijacked by a few cyber bullies, I have already shouted a couple of them down for webby bashing. I am sorry to say though, on the chandlers thread, you starting the dick waving first, I will stay out of it.
Now, as I wont be posting on YBW as I cancelled my subs (I made sure they added racism and bnp meeting forum in the explanation box), I will say with politeness and respect, we should not pay the criminals as it will put a price on every seafarer on the planet. I don't care (wrt this argument) how the Somalis got to this point, who threw buns first, WMDs, Afghanistan etc (my views have been clear on these wars in the past); Now is now and paying the terrorist is never the way to go.. (I am thinking aircraft exploding on the tarmac, aircraft falling from the sky, more and more ships being taken, Ireland seemingly kicking off again...) if it's not the chandlers, it will be someone else next month, but the criminals will have more money to produce the video.
How many people right now, somewhere, are chained to radiators waiting for some kind of ransom to be carried out...
Imagine, you raise the money, imagine your joy if they are released... watching Al Jazeera a month later and seeing the French yachty or whoever is taken next being decapitated because they didn't pay like the last lot.
It is a tightrope, I am not even on the opposite camp to you, but I disagree with your proposition, I respect you for your views and hope you can respect mine.

Re: Too quiet in here
Please keep your YBW debates to that forum
If you have a comment to make to Nick, then a PM is the route to take.

I agree with Gardenshed on this Julian, so am not going to respond to the points you have made on here. This does not mean I do not respect your right to your opinions, neither does it mean that the whole subject is taboo or censored on this forum - I don't however see the point in going over old ground that has been covered somewhere else.
Anyone wishing to start a thread on the topic of the Chandlers' predicament or the problems of marine piracy is welcome to of course subject to normal forum rules of conduct on here - as interpreted by me and Silkie. Please avoid however referring to threads on other fora other than in the form of short, anonymous quotes if you really feel you must. I will not be participating in any more threads on this subject unless it is by PM. I would also commend you to Shard's point that anyone posting should assume that there is a probability that the kidnappers may read what they have written.

Just stop going there, it always ends in tears - think of your blood pressure.

Said the same thing to him yesterday in a PM but it's a bit like picking a scab IMO - he knows he shouldn't but...
