Origo Stove Fuel

Post by Nick »

I've become a fan of Origo stoves. On a recent trip from Sweden to W. Scotland we originally burnt light or non-coloured fuel bought in Scandinavia which was relatively sweet-smelling and burnt with a blue flame. When this ran out on the Scottish leg of the trip we purchased purple meths from B&Q. While this burnt fine it was definitely a lot smellier and less pleasant.

(Yes, I know that's because us Jocks drink the stuff etc)

So - does anyone know where to get cleaner fuel (denatured alcohol rather than meths?) and what is the cheapest source?

Get tae France . . .

Post by Nick »

Well, I've done some research and it seems that you can't get it here - it's all bonded by the Customs and Excise and you need a license.

You can get it in France, though, or so I am told. If any of you Southern sailing types use or have friends who use meths stoves then you might want to add it to your vino purchases next time you pop across the channel.

Fuel in France

Post by Steve C »

On our last but one boat we had an alcohol cooker. Using meths was not only smelly but I found that it left a residue in the priming dishes. regular trips to france enabled us to buy "Alcool a Bruler" (literally "cooking alcohol") from most French hardware shops. It is usually on a display with Petrole Dissamoritise, Acetone, Trichlorethelyne and several other "banned2 substances in nanny state Britain.
