Missing Magnet?

Post by ash »

As I mentioned on another thread, I've just fitted a Clipper Duet.

I had sort of hoped (ie I hadn't checked) that the Nasa paddlewheel fitting would fit the old Stowe skin fitting but no luck so I've used the old paddlewheel fitting.

Sea trials on Saturday show that with very little calibration the log shows half speed so I assume that I'm short of a magnet.

The accuracy of the Stowe was never very linear but could be set to be OK around the 5 knt mark, and checking the manual shows that it only has calibration of approx +/- 25 % so I don't think that I've lost a magnet.

Looks as though I'll have to pull the unit ( I'm always wary of having to do this when afloat ) and see if I can use the wheel from the new Nasa fitting and fit it into the Stowe.

I eventually got round to pulling the log out on a rainy Sunday afternoon a couple of weekends ago.

The amount of water shipped isn't that much but it's quite impressive to see the fountain of water rising out of the saloon seat base.

It was fairly obvious that the Nasa paddlewheel wasn't ever going to fit into the Stowe log so on to plan 'B' or 'C'.

The Stowe unit is very well made with two tapered pins which screw in to provide the spindles for the paddlewheel and the vane opposite the magnet had a small brass plug screwed into it (for balance?).

I burst open the Nasa wheel and recovered one of the ( very small ) magnets which I epoxied into the hole vacated by the above plug.

Rebuilt and refitted the log last Sunday and a sail shows that the Nasa Duet now shows 'normal' speeds - didn't have my GPS so still to check the accuracy.

PS - Doesn't time fly? - Looking at my previous post - I've been 'planning' this repair for over a year!
