Tigh Dearg Hotel and Restaurant, Loch Maddy

The Tigh Dearg in Lochmaddy village is well worth the attention of visiting yachts. There are showers, a gym, a sauna, a steam room (not operating during our visit), and laundry facilities (after 2.00pm each day).

The bar sells its own Tigh Dearg house ale from the Isle of Skye Brewing Company, and the meals range from upmarket bar meals to some really nice dishes, perhaps a bit pricier than the usual west coast fare, but well worth it. The wine list is also pretty decent.

Very friendly, professional approach. It seems to be a fairly new business, and has won some impressive accolades. You can see why.

As their website says,

• Lochmaddy bay with its 300 miles of coastline, which is overlooked by most rooms in the hotel, provide our kitchen with scallops, fresh salmon, mussels, langoustines, lobsters, crab and a vast variety of sea fish. Our spectacular beaches provide many species such as cockles, razor fish and oysters and our thousand freshwater lochs provide wild salmon, sea trout and wild brown trout.
  
  The hills surrounding the village are abundant with deer and game as well as heather fed lamb which is a must.
  
  The machair land to the west of North Uist provide us with potatoes and purely organic vegetables (a meal in their right) and the cattle that graze amongst them provide us with world class beef.

Thanks for the info. Last time we were in Lochmaddy we went into the old hotel which was nice enough but 'tired'. We also spent some time in the Museum up the road, which was fab and well worth spending some time.

Nice to see a new facility like the Tigh Dearg. Hope to be up that way soon.

While we're on the subject, is it true that Canna potatoes are the best in the world? I remember a Scottish lady aboard one dive vessel we used to use who swore that they were. Very good they were, certainly, but best in the world?

Newly picked Bute potatoes must come in for the crown as best potatoes in the world.

Although told that Givan pots are the best as they still use seaweed as fertiliser.

Ahh... Girvan epicures.
The best were the ones scrumped from Chapeldonan Farm by ankle-biters who used to skive off school. They would dig them up before the harvesting started, leaving the shaws intact, then flog them round the houses.
I got to know the farmer quite well and he never knew we'd been enjoying the first of the crop for years.
A plateful with some oatmeal herring... yum!

Don't get hung about it. There are some who incessantly proclaim that any little thing from Scotland is the best in the world, that everything good in the world was invented by a Scot, and that the scottish institutions are the best in the world. Sensible people take it all with a pinch of salt and even snigger slightly at the mention of Edinburgh's banking sector.
Anyone going to Tiree this weekend for the regatta? See you there. Apparently the surfing there is the best in the world.

Very good news. I remember going for lunch in the old hotel about 20 years ago and being deeply underwhelmed. There was an old bloke who had the art of mooching drinks from tourists down to a fine art. He would work his way round the room being slightly annoying but when you bought him a whisky he would then move on to the next table. The food wasn't much cop in those days either, wherever the spuds had come from.

I really wish I'd known about this place last week. Spent several days weatherbound on a VB at the ferry pier, eating (when it was possible to get ashore) at the Lochmaddy Hotel. Mostly OK, with only one really bad meal (chicken tika massala offered, watery onion and boiled chicken curry supplied), but beer a bit iffy and no showers available (under refurbishment). Lack of showers was a bit of a theme on this year's trip: the only ashore showers obtained were at Rona (£5). Isleoransay had no free bedrooms, and Tarbert was shower, and indeed mains water, free following a burst pipe.
