Absolutely spot on,one of my little dreams to make it over there.The photies are cracking,nice weather by the look of it and no swell!
I missed out on a heli trip there a number (great number) of years ago and always regretted it.
I WILL do it one day.

Some interesting pics Nick. The village bay looks like a natural harbour but must exposed to seas from the E to S.

There's nearly always a swell gets into the bay anyway, and in winds S to E the anchorage is usually untenable. It can also be pretty squally - Hirta is only two and a half square miles in area but has four peaks over 1000ft.

The Pilot recommends going ashore as soon as you are anchored, as you may have to leave at any time if conditions change. I have been pretty lucky - it is the second time I have been there and we have been able to anchor for two nights. (Previous visit was about twelve years ago in a friend's boat).

I was lucky enough to go there in 1991, aboard the Gaelic Rose, out of Lochaline, and again in 1993, this time aboard the Monaco, from Oban. Both times had spectacular diving, and both times had bad trips back when it started to blow. Stac Lee and Boreray, Village bay, and the rest, will always have a very special place in my heart.

You are lucky.

Edit: Is there still a pub there - the Puff Inn? There was a picture on the wall in there of a man with two sets of eyes, and whenever you looked at it, you felt drunk.

Puff Inn is still there, but yachties aren't allowed in any more because it is technically a military establishment and we might be terrorists.

Nick, on a similar search for enlightenment, you mentioned showers. Where are they to be obtained?

And I fully support that. Many's the time I've thought about packing my boat full of HE and tacking slowly upwind, fighting the Bristol Channel tides and covering 1.7 knots SOG towards some distant tanker, hoping he'd still be there next Tuesday when I deliver my payload.

Anyway.

In 1993, we drove the 500 odd miles to Oban, loaded the boat, steamed for 8 hours to Harris, waited overnight, steamed several more hours to St Kilda and finally got to the Puff Inn, St Kilda, at the edge of the world.

The barman was from Pyle, about 5 miles from us here in Bridgend. Quite disappointing really.
