Proper sailing

Post by Silkie »

Currently reading Wandering Under Sail (30p from my favourite charity bookshop in Largs) by the the very wonderful Eric Hiscock. These are the tales of his early, mostly single-handed, engine-less sailing in the 23' gaff-rigged cutter Wanderer II.

I've just finished the section dealing with his West Coast trip where he describes anchoring in Puilladobhrain. I have single-handed in and anchored without an engine but with a favourable breeze and because I didn't really have much choice. ECH, however, wouldn't turn a hair about getting the anchor and tacking out single-handed.

I'd go to the pub and check the forecast for the morrow.

I suspect he wouldn't have had to thread his way through so many boats as we do!

With or without other boats that entrance is still a bit narrow and rocky for SH tacking IMO.

Nae probs for a fine ship like yours,

however, I think we would have problems if there was a need for tacking less than 180....
